Julian May BSc (Hons) MCOptom FBDO – Optometrist

Julian began his optical career in 1984 as a trainee Dispensing Optician. He went back to City University in London to study Optometry in 1989, achieving a First Class Honours Degree in 1992 & passed his professional qualifying examinations the following year. He has a Professional Certificate in Glaucoma (Cardiff University) and special interests in Contact lenses, Low Vision and has a Level 3 Diploma in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening. 

 
Deb Brown FBDO - Qualified Dispensing Optician

Deb began working in optics in 2000 and qualified as a Dispensing Optician in September 2008. During that time Deb has worked for both independent and high street multiple optician practices. She joined Julian May Opticians in November 2010. Deb takes a special interest in Low Vision and is constantly on the lookout for new and innovative ways of helping our patients that have less than perfect sight even with the best spectacles or contact lenses.

 
Harriet Harris BSc (Hons)  FBDO - Qualified Dispensing Optician

Harriet started with us in September 2010 and began her Dispensing Optics Diploma the following year. She passed her Diploma with flying colours in the summer of 2014. Harriet also has a degree in Criminal Psychology. We are pleased to say that she hasn't needed to use this particular qualification whilst working for us! Harriet is closely involved in the NHS Minor Eye Conditions Service that we offer.

 
Suzanne Flay BSc (Hons) FBDO – Qualified Dispensing Optician

Suzanne started with us in February 2016 but already had 8 years of optical experience by then. Suzanne took her final Dispensing Exams after 3 years of hard study in June 2017 and we are all delighted to announce that she achieved First Class Honours in her degree and has now become our third Qualified Dispensing Optician. She is especially interested in the monitoring of Age Related Macular Degeneration. She overseas the screening of patients at risk using a Macula Pigment Screener. 

 
Jane May  – Optical Assistant

Jane has no formal optical qualifications but has worked closely with Julian since 1996. Amongst other things, Jane is responsible for selecting all of our spectacle frames and sunglasses – not an easy task as we now stock over 1000 samples!

 
Mary Hebdidge – Optical Assistant

Mary started with us in October 2016 after 7 years of other customer facing roles. Mary has proven herself to be quick to learn, keen to help and always has a smile on her face.

 
Alex Mandall – Optical Assistant

Alex started with us in February 2017. He loves all of our technology – the optometric diagnostic equipment but most especially our brand new “Mr Orange” optical glazing lab. Alex had two years of previous retail experience before he joined us.

 
Marta Bastos – Optical Assistant

Marta started working with us from May 2017. She works closely with the Optometrists performing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans and Visual Field tests. Marta is a dynamo, constantly on the go and constantly smiling! She had three years of previous fashion retail experience before she joined us.
